Along with most people I used to assume that there was only one type of
alopecia, the type where the patient loses all their hair. In reality there are
many types of alopecia with different levels of severity.
Androgenetic Alopecia
Androgenetic alopecia is the most common type known as male and
female pattern baldness. This type causes gradual hair thinning and loss
usually follows the pattern on the scalp. In men it typically starts receiving
the hairline, then moving to the thinning of the crown. Women generally
experience a diffuse thinning over the crown, maintaining the frontal
hairline. It results from a mix of genetic and hormonal factors and can
impact up to 50% of men over the age of 50 and 50% of women over 65.
Diffuse Alopecia
Diffuse alopecia causes widespread and uniform hair thinning across the
scalp rather than following a specific pattern like other types of
alopecia. This affects both men and women leading to an overall reduction
in hair density, making the scalp more visible. It can occur during two hair
phases:
● Telogen effluvium: The shedding phase
● Anagen effluvium: The growing phase
The causes of diffuse alopecia are varied and can include factors such as
severe stress, nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, or underlying
medical conditions like thyroid disorders.
Areata Alopecia
Areata Alopecia is an autoimmune condition that causes sudden, patchy
hair loss.Unlike other forms of hair loss, alopecia areata occurs when the
immune system mistakenly attacks healthy hair follicles. The exact cause of
this isn’t fully understood, but it’s believed to be triggered by a combination
of genetic factors and environmental influences, such as stress or illness.
There are two types:
● Totalis- The loss of all the hair on your head
● Universalis- The loss of all your hair all over your body
