what does “waterproof” really mean in beauty?

you’ve seen it everywhere. waterproof mascara. long-wear foundation. smudge-proof everything. but here’s the question no one is asking… what actually makes a product waterproof?

in many cases, that performance comes from a group of chemicals called PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals.” these ingredients are used in beauty to help products resist water, last longer on the skin, and stay smooth and transfer-resistant. PFAS are designed to repel both water and oil, which is exactly why they’re used in products that promise not to budge.
this doesn’t mean every waterproof product contains PFAS. but research has shown that waterproof and long-wear formulas are more likely to rely on this type of chemistry. in fact, independent testing has found high levels of fluorine, a marker often associated with PFAS, in a large percentage of waterproof mascaras and long-wear makeup products. so while it’s not every product, the connection is strong enough that it’s worth paying attention.
PFAS are called “forever chemicals” because they don’t break down easily. not in the environment, and not in the body. they can build up over time, which is why they’ve become a growing concern in the health and beauty space. while research is still ongoing, studies have linked high exposure to hormone disruption, immune system effects, and other long-term health concerns. even the FDA has stated that there is limited safety data on many PFAS currently used in cosmetics.
another reason this topic matters is because you won’t see “PFAS” listed on an ingredient label. instead, they appear under more complex names. some common ones include PTFE, or ingredients that contain words like:
perfluoro
polyperfluoro
fluoro,
trifluoro
tetrafluoro
not every ingredient with these terms is automatically harmful, but they are a signal to take a closer look and ask more questions.
at bangin hair, we believe performance should never come at the cost of your health. you shouldn’t need harsh or questionable ingredients just to get results. that’s why we take a different approach, focusing on ingredients that support your scalp and overall hair health, not just temporary performance.
because real results should feel as good as they look.
